Draft:Biohacking Village

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Biohacking Village is a group within the DEF CON cybersecurity conference that is dedicated to the intersection between cybersecurity, medical technology, and Do-it-yourself biology. Like other villages within DEF CON, the Biohacking Village offers talks, workshops, and the opportunity to try hacking medical devices in a safe environment. Presentation and workshop topics often cover medical device hacking, the vulnerabilities found in healthcare IT systems, or the use of pharmaceuticals to alter a person's health outside of government-approved channels.[1].

The Biohacking Village was founded in 2014 and is a 501(c)(3) Not-for-Profit organization[2].

Safety

[edit]

The Biohacking Village requires that all entrants sign a "Hippocratic Oath for Hackers," which is an attestation that the entrant will not hack the medical devices owned by other conference-goers. For example, a pacemaker device or an insulin pump that is currently implanted in or is in use by another DEF CON attendee is explicitly off limits for hacking. In addition, this oath states that, if a person discovers a vulnerability in any medical devices during the conference, they will responsibly disclose that vulnerability to the manufacture, as is standard practice in white hat hacking[3]

Notable Talks and Workshops

  • "Securing Your Medical Device Network on a Shoe String Budget" by Helen Negre and Michael McMahon (2020)[4]
  • "How to Grow a Brain in a Jar: Neuroengineering 101" by Jack Twiddy (2020)[5]
  • "Foldit: Solve Puzzles for Science," a demonstration of the protein-folding game, Fold.it, by Firas Khatib (2023)

  • "Med Team vs. Red Team," a medical device hacking workshop hosted by the hacker, v3ga (2024)

Conferences

Though DEF CON is the largest conference that Biohacking Village appears at, the group also offers presentations and workshops at other conferences around the globe, including but not limited to:
