Dj M80

[edit]

DJ M80, born Justin Salvatore Byrd on March 1,1986, is an accomplished American music professional. He has spent over two decades perfecting his craft as a Record producer, Audio engineer, DJ, and emcee. His diverse range of skills has propelled him to become one of the most sought-after music professionals in the New York region and beyond.

Growing Up

[edit]

DJ M80 (born March 1, 1986) is an American DJ, audio engineer, music producer and rapper known for his contributions to the hip-hop genre. Born and raised on the east side of Rochester, New York, DJ M80 (Justin Salvatore Byrd) developed a passion for music at an early age.

His interest in music began when he received a karaoke machine from his parents: Nina Byrd and Tony Darby, for Christmas in 1995. This gift sparked his enthusiasm for music, and he spent the next three years exploring and writing music, particularly focusing on hip-hop. By the age of 12, DJ M80 had joined his first rap group, Foul Mindz / Hcm Gang. The group consisted of his classmates, including Jerome Hawthorne (Jd Riggz), Antoine Stewart (Inf Da Beast), Breiux Dash (Breuix Flames), and Michael Dungey.

These early collaborations were instrumental in shaping DJ M80's musical style and honing his skills. Over the years, he has continued to develop his unique sound, demonstrating his innate talent and creativity in the music industry.

Career Beginnings & Early Success (2010)

[edit]

In 2010, DJ M80 gained his first significant industry break through his collaboration with rapper G.Dep. He was introduced to G.Dep by Ohio rapper Meta4ce, who had shared the spotlight on MTV 2's One World Hip Hop Championship.[1] tv show. DJ M80 and G.Dep immediately clicked when M80 booked him for his 23rd birthday party in his hometown. This led to recording sessions in DJ M80’s studio and a mutual decision to work closely together as a unit.

DJ M80 relocated to The Bronx to help Jonathan Owusu, G.Dep's former manager, in revitalizing G.Dep's career. During this time, he became G.Dep's producer and DJ, producing tracks such as "Can't Stunt on the Hood" and "Edge of My Mind," and compiling the mixtape "Dep & Friends."

This was DJ M80's first extended time away from home, but his stay was short-lived due to homesickness and financial instability, as he needed to return to his 2-month-old daughter. In 2011, G.Dep would later turn himself in for a murder committed 17 years earlier[2]

Collaboration with Trife Diesel and Wu-Tang Clan Affiliates

[edit]

DJ M80's career took a notable turn when he met Trife Diesel, an affiliate of the Wu-Tang Clan, at a pool party hosted by P. Diddy and Fabolous at The Harrahs Casino in Atlantic City in 2010. Their collaboration resulted in DJ M80 taking on multiple roles for Trife Diesel’s album Project Pope 2[3], where he served as producer, engineer, mixer, and mastering engineer. DJ M80 produced key tracks such as "Project Pope Intro" and "Look What Happens." As a central figure in Trife Diesel's team, he has acted as his personal DJ, audio engineer, and producer. This partnership also led to the creation of the album 780[4], which DJ M80 fully produced and engineered. Additionally, their collaboration culminated in The Project Pope Tour, a midwestern tour with 12 stops in 2018. They share a family-like bond and even refer to each other as brothers.

Relocation to Buffalo and New Ventures (2012–Present)

[edit]

In 2012, DJ M80 relocated to Buffalo, New York, seeking new opportunities following the incarceration of G.Dep. He established a recording studio, which was unfortunately robbed three weeks into his lease. The incident led to a small claims court case, which was later featured on Judge Judy [Season 19 E165][5], where DJ M80 accused his landlord of insufficient security.

Undeterred, DJ M80 continued his work from DJ Shay’s studio, leading to collaborations with Black Soprano Family artists Benny The Butcher, Rick Hyde, Heem, and El Camino working on various projects. His time in Buffalo would later pair him with Conway The Machine resulting in a recording engineering credit on the track: King Kong Riddim[6], Starring Jay-Z and featuring Conway The Machine, Jadakiss and "Back Road Gee." The song was on the Netflix The Harder They Fall [7] motion picture soundtrack.

DJ M80's affiliation with the Wu-Tang Clan extended to work with Killarmy and 9th Prince, who is the brother of RZA. He was credited as the mastering engineer on Killarmy’s The Madman's Revenge EP[8] and Full Metal Jackets[9], and as the mixing engineer on the 2024 release Splitting Atoms[10] by Killarmy and Wu-Tang Killabeez.

In 2022 Dj M80 was passed the torch by Dj Mathmatics, and became a resident Dj and host On Wu-Tang Radio[11] with his mixshow: The Serious Injury List[12]
