Binh Long High School for the Gifted (Vietnamese: Truờng THPT chuyên Bình Long) is a high school for the Gifted accredited by the Ministry of Education and Training in Binh Long Town, Binh Phuoc Province, Vietnam. The school is established under the Decision no.286/QD-UBND dated February 16th 2012 of the People's Committee of Binh Phuoc. On June 19th 2013, the school officially came into operation[1]. This is the second High School for the Gifted in Binh Phuoc Province, after Quang Trung High School for the Gifted, established in 2004.

Infastructure

Binh Long High School for the Gifted has spacious facilities with a Theory Area (30 classrooms); an Office Area (14 management offices); 2 laboratories; a swimming pool; a football field; a male dormitory and a female dormitory (110 rooms with a capacity of nearly 800 students); 2 dining halls with a capacity of over 800 students; along with a public house, a hall, a yard (flower beds, ornamental plants), and a spacious, clean, beautiful, and convenient parking lot.

Education

Binh Long High School for the Gifted offers 7 classes for each grade, with each class majoring in a single subject. The subjects include: Mathematics (2 classes); Physics (1 class); Chemistry (1 class); Information technology (1 class); Biology (1 class); Vietnamese Literature (1 class); and English language (1 class). Class size is fixed at 35 students.

Additionally, the school hosts six Excellent Student Teams, each focusing on a different subject. These teams consist of the most skilled students that are selected for intensive training in preparation for academic competitions at all levels, from local to national.

The school used to host one non-specialized high-quality class, however, this concept has been eliminated by the recent Decision of the Ministry of Education and Training.[2]

Admission

Students are subject to undertake an advanced written examination encompasses of 4 modules: Mathematics, Vietnamese Literature; English; and a major subject exam. The Mathematics; Vietnamese Literature; English modules follow the same exam format as those who participate in the High School Entrance Test. However, the major subject exam is designed by the school with complicated questions in many fields to assess and classify students into different classes based on their performances and subject registration. About 280 students achieving the highest scores will be chosen from all candidates. In each academic year, a list of successfully enrolled students are sighted and approved by the Head of Department of Education and Training Binh Phuoc Province.

The school's admission zone is Binh Phuoc Province, and Binh Duong Province, all students that graduate secondary school in these 2 provinces are eligible to apply.

Curriculum

Binh Long High School for the Gifted is committed to producing the most rigorous academic program to its student. Students undertake compulsory subjects that are outlined by the Vietnam Ministry of Education, however, all of them are required to finish additional hours in their specialized majors, along with submitting more advanced coursework in their registered subject.

Compulsory subjects are: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Vietnamese Literature; English language, Biology, History, Information Technology, Geography, Civics Education, Vocational Education, National Defense Education, and Physical Education.

Specialized coursework includes: Advanced coursework in Physics; Advanced Coursework in Mathematics; Advanced coursework in Chemistry; Advanced Coursework in Vietnamese Literature; Advanced coursework in Biology; Advanced coursework in English language; Advanced coursework in Information technology; Advanced coursework in Physics.

Extracurricular activities

The school has established 03 domains of extracurricular activities:

  • Cultural domain: where members share learning tips and support each other to improve.
  • Skills domain: includes Event club; Dance club; Dance club; Volunteer club; Art club
  • Sports domain: includes Table tennis club; Badminton club; Football Club

Students may choose to participate in any of the clubs in these 3 domains at their discretion.

Outstanding achievements

  • The high school graduation rate and university entrance rate have remained at 100% throughout the school's operation.
  • From 2016, the school has produced several valedictorians in Binh Phuoc province. It also leads in many academic competitions, such as the Traditional Olympic 30-4; the Contest for Selecting Excellent Students of Gifted High School in the Coastal and Northern Delta regions, the Robocon contest; and the National Excellent Students competition.[3]
  • Since 2016; the school has had at least two students that advance to the second round for team selection for Vietnam to compete in many international academic competitions.[4]
  • Continuously from 2015; the school's Excellent Student Teams have consistently ranked among the top 5 schools in the South of Vietnam (among 64 schools that participated in the Annual Traditional Olympic 30-4 hosted by the Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted).
  • In 2023; the school's Excellent Student Teams won 844 Provincial Academic Awards and 162 National Academic Awards[5]
