Biography
[edit]Early Life and Career
[edit]Bi Shucheng was born in July 1894 in Wendeng County, Dengzhou Prefecture, Shandong Province (presently a district of Weihai City),
In 1908, he was enrolled in the Yantai Gendarmerie School and during the Xinhai Revolution, Bi joined the Wendeng student army. In 1912, Bi attended the Jinan Military Officer Training School and later transferred to Jiangsu's officer training school.
In Jiangsu, he gained the recognition of his corps supervisor, Zhang Zongchang due to their shared Shandong origins. Upon graduation, he joined Zhang in Harbin, where he took part in the December 1917 disarmement of Bolshevik troops in Harbin following the Russian revolution, recieving the rank of Infantry Captian for his role.
In Febuary 1918, Bi was appointed adjutant in the Fengtian Army's 6th Mixed Brigade.
In 1922, Bi established and commanded a Military Officer Training School in Suining, Hunan. Those trained at this institute would later be organised into an Engineering brigade commanded by Bi.
Rise within the Fengtian Clique
[edit]During the Second Zhili–Fengtian War in 1924, Bi Shucheng was appointed commander of the 13th Brigade of the Zhenwei Army (镇威军第), and subsequently commanded the Fengtian Army's 32nd Brigade. After his role in mediating a troop mutiny that took place on Wen Shude's Bohai Naval Fleet, Bi was awarded the title of Navy Vice Admiral.
During the Jiangsu-Zhejiang War , Bi led two regiments of Fengtian troops to capture Jiangyin.
Following the war, he was promoted to several key positions within Zhang Zongchang's military administration of Shandong.
Loss of Shanghai and Death
[edit]In 1927, Bi was commanding forces in Shanghai during the Northern Expedition. As troops with the National Revolutionary Army approached the city, Bi engaged in talks to defect, but no arrangement was made. On 21 March 1927, an armed uprising led by Zhou Enlai and Chen Duxiu occured against warlord control in the city, and Bi's army headquarters were overrun and captured.
Bi fled to Qingdao via the British Concession in Shanghai and was repremanded by Zhang Zongchang. Zhang was later informed of his discussions to defect.
On 4 April 1927, Bi was summoned to Jinan and shot by Chu Yupu's troops as he stepped off the train in Jinan.
