Benjamin Chewter (born 1983 in Sussex) is a British organist and conductor.
Early life and education
[edit]Born in Eastbourne, Chewter was a pupil at Christ's Hospital School. He was then successively Organ Scholar at Canterbury Cathedral, Organ Scholar of Emmanuel College, Cambridge (where he read Music and was also Assistant Organist to King's Voices, the mixed-voice choir of King's College Chapel), and Organ Scholar at Westminster Abbey under James O'Donnell.[1]. He studied organ repertoire with Stephen Farr and Dame Gillian Weir, and improvisation with David Briggs[2]
Career
[edit]In 2008 Chewter took up the post of Assistant Organist at Lincoln Cathedral, where he re-founded the Cathedral's chamber choir, and moved to Chester Cathedral in 2011 as Assistant Director of Music[3], where he was the principal organist for services, concerts and broadcasts with the Cathedral Choir. Under his direction the Cathedral's Nave Choir toured abroad for the first time (Munich and Hildesheim in Germany) and appeared live on BBC Radio 4. His debut recording, Organ Showpieces from Chester Cathedral, was released in 2013.
In 2016 he was appointed Organist of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in central London.
