Barış Göktürk, anglicized to Baris Gokturk (born 1982.[1]) is a Turkish American artist based in New York City.
Biography
[edit]Gokturk was born in 1982 in Ankara, the capital of the Turkish Republic, to journalist parents. He grew up mostly in Istanbul and Adjuntas, Puerto Rico.[1]
Gokturk attended Galatasaray Lisesi,[2] a French-language high school in central Istanbul. In 2001, he moved to New York to study Fine Arts and Animation at Parsons School of Design[3], and later he received master's degrees in Painting from Hunter College[3] and Sculpture from Columbia University.[1] He has since taught art at the college level to students at Parsons School of Design[3], Hunter College[4], Columbia University[3], and Pace University[3], as well as serving as a critic to graduate printmaking students at the Rhode Island School of Design[5]
Artwork
[edit]Gokturk's artwork has been influenced by the visual language and history of protest movements, including the Gezi protests[6], the Black Lives Matter movement[7], and the Saturday Mothers[8]. According to Claire Breukel, "His unique visual language is crafted from a desire to see socio-political change and to harness the power and mutability of the image."[8]
In 2016, Gokturk organized a group of fellow residents at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture to travel to Puerto Rico, where, alongside local artists, they founded the arts and culture collective Junte in Adjuntas, with the mentorship of the environmental organization Casa Pueblo.[9] The name Junte, a play on Puerto Rico's La Junta, describes a casual act of social gathering, and gestures towards the group's anti-hierarchical structure.[10]
