Barhama (born Ebrima Cham in Sanchaba Sulyjobe, 1992[1]) is a Gambian Afro-pop artist/musician. Barhama is a singer, a songwriter, an instrumentalist, an actor, and an activist who has spent a lot of his life singing while inserting his diverse talents into music, to entertain, educate and inform.[2]
Life
[edit]Barhama was born on 17 March 1992 in Sachaba Sulayjobe, The Gambia. He was born with the love and desire of becoming a musician and came to light when he was 13 years old. However, due to his poor family background, he was discouraged from achieving his music career in favor of going to school. He began writing and recording songs in early 2010 at a low scale due to the fear that he may be stopped by his parents from venturing into music.[3]
Further adhering to his parents' advice, he focused on his schooling until upon graduation from high school; he pursued a certificate course in Travel and Tourism at the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI).[4]
Career
[edit]He began his music career in 2016 after driving inspiration and motivation from his environment and the people around him. The problems facing society and the world at large have been his source of inspiration as a musician.[5]
He was the lead vocalist of a household musical group, the Kerr Gi family.[6] Barhama fine-tuned the shape of Gambian music through the introduction of diverse cultures in his productions, mixing local and international instruments to serve the best taste of entertainment to the audience in The Gambia and beyond.[7]
He does not only sing to entertain, but he also uses music as a tool to create awareness on crucial matters, thereby extremely changing the lives of people. This includes but is not limited to songs and performances on Gender-Based Violence, Climate change, Peace and Reconciliation, Transitional Justice, Employment, etc.[8]
In June 2019, he represented The Gambia at the UNFPA Summit in Dakar, Senegal[9], and made an advocacy performance on the protection and promotion of the rights and welfare of women. In 2019, he went on his first European tour where his "golden voice" began attracting new sets of fans, well-wishers, and labels.[10]
