The Baptist History & Heritage Society (BHHS), formerly known as the Southern Baptist Historical Society before 2001, is an academic and professional organization focused on preserving, promoting, and studying the history and heritage of Baptists in the United States and around the world.

History

[edit]

BHHS was formed in 1938 as the Southern Baptist Historical Society. It was initially created to support the study and preservation of the history of Southern Baptists. Over time, the organization's scope broadened to include all Baptist traditions, leading to a name change in 2001 to the Baptist History & Heritage Society. The organization claims the name change reflects its commitment to a more inclusive approach, encompassing the diverse expressions of Baptist faith and practice.

In July 2014, Aaron Weaver was named executive director.[1]

Activities

[edit]

BHHS promotes Baptist history through various activities, including publishing a scholarly journal and other materials, organizing conferences and workshops, preserving historical documents, and offering educational resources to enhance the teaching of Baptist heritage.

Awards

[edit]

BHHS issues several awards on an annual basis, recognizing outstanding contributions in the field of Baptist history. Presentations are made at the annual conference.

Leadership

[edit]

The Society is governed by a board of directors, which includes scholars, ministers, and laypeople with a deep interest in Baptist history. The board oversees the organization's activities and ensures that its mission is carried out effectively.
