- Comment: Notability is not inherited, and more independent reliable sources about the ASA itself is needed. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talk • contribs) 01:36, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
The Australian Songwriters Association was founded in 1979 and is a national, non-profit, member organisation dedicated to the support of songwriters and their art. The Chairman of the Australian Songwriters Association is Mr Dennis Burgess, who received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2024 for service to the performing arts and to the music industry.[1][2][3]
The ASA provides avenues for support and education of Australian songwriters, and recognition and promotion of accomplished members. The Association was founded in Melbourne by businessman Tom Louch (1932–1998) and recording engineer Rudy Brandsma (1944–1983), who saw the need for an organisation that would bring Australian songwriters together.[4][5] The Rudy Brandsma Award was established in 1983 in memory of the late ASA Chairman Rudy Brandsma. The Award is presented annually by the Board of Directors of The Australian Songwriters Association in recognition of songwriting excellence by an ASA member.[6]
The Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 2004 to honour the lifetime achievements of Australia's greatest songwriters and the award is presented annually at the Australian Songwriters Association Annual Awards. Inductees include Kate Ceberano (2014), Andrew Farris and Michael Hutchence of INXS (2016),[7] Iva Davies of Icehouse (2018), Andrew Greedy Smith and Martin Plaza of Mental As Anything (2019), and Colin Hay of Men At Work (2020).
