The Assad's curse or Assad must go meme is a set of Internet memes intended to mock leaders and international figures who have opposed Bashar al-Assad and his regime.
Internet phenomenon
[edit]The curse was first mentioned in a tweet posted by a certain @iadtawil onMay 6, 2016.
The meme mocks leaders calling for Bashar al-Assad's departure from power, who end up leaving power while Bashar al-Assad remains in power at the same time.[1].
The meme comes in 4 phases:
- International leader says “Assad must go!”
- Bashar al-Assad responds: “Who must go?”
- The leader leaves power (in different ways)
- Assad laughs as he remains in power
The phenomenon has been amplified since 2017, when many Western and Arab leaders who opposed Bashar al-Assad had already left power (some died in office) while Syrian government forces were in the process of reconquering Syrian territory after defeating the forces of the Syrian opposition and the jihadists of the Islamic State.
