Dr. Asma Akram

Asma Akram (Urdu: اسماء اکرم) (29 August 1990), is a Pakistani first female who earn Master of Surgery (MS) degree in Orthopedics from University of Health Sciences, Lahore.[1][2][3][4][5] She did work in several field, indluing Hands and Upper Limb Surgery, Hip replacement and Knee replacement, Trauma  and Arthroplasty. She successfully defended her MS thesis with the title “Comparative Study of Functional Outcome & Union Of Medical Malelus Fracture Treated by 4 Mm Lag Screw Versus Tension Band Wiring in Denis Weber Type B and C”  on July 12, 2024 .[6]

In 2016, Dr. Asma noticed that there is a dire need of a female orthopedic surgeon in Pakistan as female patients across Pakistan face severe challenges when consulting with male orthopedic surgeons. Due to this, Dr. Asma adopted the field of orthopedic surgery. She started her training as a postgraduate resident in orthopedic surgery in 2018. Quite hard to continue work in a field which is tradionally dominated by men. She left no stones unturned to work and excel herself in orthopedic surgery.[7][8]

Dr. Asma's path to achievement included extensive training at some of Pakistan's most prestigious medical schools. At the Children's Hospital in Lahore, the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Lahore, and the Allama Iqbal Memorial Hospital in Sialkot, she developed her abilities and knowledge. She had several obstacles during her training, but her constant dedication to her career helped her advance.[9]

This accomplishment is not only a personal victory for Dr. Akram, but it also serves as a ray of hope for many other women who want to pursue careers in medicine. Her achievements are indicative of the changing educational and career landscape for Pakistani women, where more encouragement and support are allowing them to succeed in even the most challenging sectors.[10][11]

Early life and Education

Asma's father was a Businessman. Born in Sialkot, she gets her early education from Allama Iqbal Public School, [[Sialkot]]. She earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from University of Health Sciences in 2015. She is an alumnus of Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, where she received MS (Orthopedic Surgery) in 2024. She is the first student that had been passed from Department of orthopedic surgery, Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, Sialkot.

Career

She started her career by Idrees Teaching Hospital Sialkot as a Medical Officer in 2016. Then she joined Department of Pathology at Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College as a Demonstrator in 2017.[12] She completed MS Orthopedic Surgery from UHS in 2024. She is currently focusing on serving orthopedic patients at her own trust clinic located at Agrics Town, Lahore. Beyond just being a personal success, Dr. Akram's achievement is significant because it shows what can be accomplished with hard work and a supportive atmosphere, as well as serving as an inspiration to others. Her experience serves as a potent reminder that women can overcome obstacles and make important contributions in any field of endeavor provided they are resilient and work hard.[13][14]
