Aryavaidyan P.V. Rama Varier (24 August 1908 – 10 September 1976) was a distinguished Indian Ayurveda physician, entrepreneur, and founder of The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) Limited.[1] He was known for his significant contributions to Ayurvedic medicine, establishment of healthcare institutions, and propagation of holistic well-being.

Early life and education

[edit]

PV Rama Varier was born on 24 August 1908 in Karimpuzha, Kerala, India. He was the only son of Vaidyavichakshanan Mankulangara Kunjan Varier, a notable Sanskrit poet and physician, and Smt. Puthiya Variyath Kuttyvarasiar.[2] He lost his sibling sister Lakshmi Kutty at young age. Rama Varier's early education began at Ganapathy High School in Kozhikode. His interest in Ayurveda led him to enroll at Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal in 1926, where he studied under the guidance of Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier.

Career and contributions

[edit]

P.V. Rama Varier’s career began in 1930 when he joined Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal as the Assistant Physician to Vaidyaratnam P.S Varier. Very soon he was given independent charge of the Kozhikode branch of Arya Vaidya Sala as Manager and Chief Physician. On June 14, 1943 he resigned from Arya Vaidya Sala and on July 12 same year he started Arya Vaidya Pharmacy. He continued to be in the Board of Trustees of Arya Vaidya Sala as per P.S. Varier’s will after 1944 till November 1956 when he voluntarily resigned. In 1948 April, he converted Arya Vaidya Pharmacy to a registered company and it became The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) Limited. He had been a strong proponent of pure Ayurveda practice and same time endorsed the need and use of other medical systems for the well being of mankind. He established The Ayurvedic Trust along with Shri PSG Vekitaswamy Naidu in 1950. The nursing home started in 1957 as a clinic was planned to be expanded and in 1974 the foundation stone for The Arya Vaidya Chikitsalayam & Research Institute was laid. This was opened later by the prime minister of India Shri Morarji Desai in 1977 after the death of PV Rama Varier in 1976.

Personal life

[edit]

In 1939, Rama Varier married Pankajam Variasar, and the couple was blessed with seven children: Sarojini Varier, Kasturi Kutty, Rajagopal Rama Varier, Geetha Varma, P. R. Krishna Kumar, Durga Raghunath, and Ambika Prakash.

[edit]

Rama Varier's influence extended beyond Ayurveda, garnering friendships across social strata, including politicians, businessmen and renowned artists.[3] In 2023, the Coimbatore Corporation honored his legacy by including his biography on an information board, acknowledging his role in shaping the city's development.[4]
