art-K Ltd. is a family-owned, art education company based in the United Kingdom and it is voluntarily registered on Ofsted childcare register since November 2020.[1] It's headquarters are based in Ashtead, Surrey.
History
[edit]In 2000, Arty Club For Crafty Kids was set up by Kathryn Harper, a Speech and Language Therapist[2] who was previously Head of Paediatrics at Epsom and Ewell NHS Trust.[3] Kathryn Harper's family home was where Arty Club for Crafty Kids was set up.
In 2016, Arty Club For Crafty Kids became art-K Ltd and was co-Founded by Kathryn Harper & Emily Harper (Kathryn Harper's daughter).[4] Kathryn Harper is the Creative Director, Emily Harper is the Managing Director and David Harper is the Operations Director. The purpose of creating a limited company was to enable art-K Ltd to launch new art studios across the United Kingdom both as a franchise and to set up new studios which would be directly-owned by art-K Ltd.
In 2016 the first franchise launched; art-K Ewell.
In 2017 the first new studio which was directly-owned by art-K Ltd launched.
In 2019, art-K wins CVC Capital Partner's Young Innovator Award, which resulted in a £20,000 investment to support the launch of new studios and workshops for disadvantaged children. The purpose of CVC's award is to provide grants for businesses who support disadvantaged people in relevant sectors, to develop their business further.[5]
In March 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, all classes were taught online and art-K offered pre-recorded art classes as well.[6] Zoom art classes continued to run until 2021.[7] The classes shut down in 2021 after the United Kingdom returned to face-to-face teaching in schools,[8] at which point the demand for art-K's online classes dropped.
In 2021, art-K worked with local businesses and train stations to install murals in the local areas. This included a mural in Horsham's train station[9] and Wandsworth's Southside shopping centre, where they created a mural to highlight the shopping centre's commitment to reducing their carbon footprint.[10]
In 2021, art-K Ewell wins Surrey Wildlife Trust's People's Choice Category for the Cutting Hedge Creativity competition.[11] The focus of the competition was to highlight how important hedgerows are for biodiversity and the environment. This aligns with art-K's focus on sustainability in their studios where they aim to reduce their carbon footprint with eco-focused policies.
In 2022, art-K High Wycombe closed.[12] It reopens in September 2023.[13]
In 2023, art-K contributed 50 artists to break the Guinness Book of World Record's attempt for the most people painting online and in a single venue concurrently; the life model was Sir Lenny Henry. Sky Arts hosted the event to mark the 10th Anniversary of the art competition: Portrait Artist of the Year.[14]
In 2024, art-K launched an exhibition as part of Oxo Bargehouse's New Creatives 2024. The artwork exhibited came from over 6000 students who attend their studios nationwide. They displayed artwork, had interactive zones and workshops running throughout.[15] The exhibition recorded a moment in time of each student's abilities, interests and interpretations, celebrating creativity and individual approaches. There was a gift shop which raised money towards 2 children's charities.[16]
In 2024, there are over 50 art-K studios operating in the United Kingdom.[1]
