Arcane Distillation

[edit]

3rd-level Transmutation[1]

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: Touch

Components: V, S, M (a pinch of yeast and a drop of distilled spirits)

Duration: Instantaneous

Description:

[edit]

You touch up to 5 gallons of a nonmagical liquid, transforming it into alcohol. You can choose to make the alcohol either mundane or imbued with magical properties.

Mundane Alcohol

[edit]

The liquid is transformed into nonmagical alcohol of your choice, such as ale, wine, rum, vodka, whiskey, or other beverages. This alcohol can be consumed, traded, or used in crafting. It retains its properties indefinitely.

Magical Alcohol

[edit]

Alternatively, you imbue the alcohol with magic, creating 8 servings per gallon. Each serving must be consumed within 1 hour of creation or it loses its magic, becoming mundane alcohol. Choose one magical effect for all servings from the list below:

Positive Effects

[edit]
  • Ale (Sturdy Brew): Grants 2d6 temporary hit points for 1 hour.
  • Wine (Mystic Vintage): Grants advantage on Wisdom and Charisma saving throws for 10 minutes.
  • Rum (Molten Spirit): Grants resistance to fire damage for 10 minutes.
  • Vodka (Chill Draught): Grants resistance to cold damage and immunity to cold environments for 1 hour.
  • Whiskey (Bold Brew): Grants a +1 bonus to Strength checks and saving throws for 10 minutes.

Negative Effects

[edit]
  • Jack Daniels (Reckless Courage): The drinker gains advantage on attack rolls for 1 minute but suffers disadvantage on all saving throws during that time.
  • Devil’s Moonshine: The drinker becomes poisoned for 1 hour. While poisoned, their attacks deal an extra 1d6 poison damage, but they take 1d6 damage at the start of their turn.
  • Muddled Mead: The drinker gains the ability to see into the Ethereal Plane for 10 minutes but suffers from confusion (disadvantage on Intelligence and Wisdom checks).
  • Banshee’s Brew: The drinker emits a horrifying scream (also known as keening)[2] upon consuming this, forcing all creatures within 10 feet to make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. The drinker also becomes frightened of their shadow for the same duration.

Drunkenness Effect:[3]

[edit]

If a creature consumes more than its Constitution modifier[4] in servings of magical alcohol created by this spell within an hour, it must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or become intoxicated.

While intoxicated:[3]

  • The creature has disadvantage on Dexterity checks and saving throws.
  • Its movement speed is reduced by 10 feet.
  • It gains advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks for the duration. ----

At Higher Levels:

[edit]

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher:

  • You transform 5 additional gallons of liquid for each spell level above 3rd.
  • You can divide the alcohol into separate batches, each with a different magical effect.

Dividing the alcohol into separate batches means you can create multiple types of magical alcohol within the total liquid you transform. For example:

  • If you cast this spell at 5th level (transforming 15 gallons), you could make:
    • 5 gallons of Ale (Sturdy Brew).
    • 5 gallons of Whiskey (Bold Brew).
    • 5 gallons of Jack Daniels[5] (Reckless Courage).

Each batch retains the magical properties you choose for it. However, the effects of different magical brews do not stack. A creature[6] may only benefit from one effect per batch, and if a creature consumes multiple servings from different batches, the effects of those servings do not combine or stack. For example, temporary hit points[7] from Ale (Sturdy Brew) will not combine with temporary hit points from another batch, and advantage on attack rolls from Jack Daniels (Reckless Courage) will not stack with any other advantage effect.

Available for: Wizard, Sorcerer, Bard, Artificer, Warlock, Cleric

This is a homebrew that all DMs should consider in their next session
