- Introduction: Anton Crone is a South African magazine editor and journalist in the fields of wildlife travel and conservation. Since 2023 he has been editor of African Birdlife magazine[1], having previously edited the travel magazine, Getaway, and the online wildlife magazine, Africa Geographic. He has contributed writing and photography to various publications including Sunday Times South Africa[2][3][4], Wall Street Journal[5] and BBC Wildlife magazine[6]. Crone was previously a creative director in the advertising industry having worked for a number of agencies including Hunt Lascaris TBWA and Saatchi and Saatchi in South Africa, and Ogilvy & Mather in the USA and Norway. In 2011 he left the advertising industry to explore journalism, writing part time for the commercial film magazine, Screen Africa, and other advertising industry publications. In 2013 he exposed a fake advertising campaign by ad agency Metropolitan Republic after it won a prestigious South African advertising award[7]. The article exposing the fake advert shed light on the advertising industry's propensity to create scam campaigns for no reason other than to win awards.
