Anand Pon

Mr. Anand Pon (born 30 December 1956) was a Malaysian educator and pioneer in developing the first accredited Diplomas in Enforcement and Compliance as well as a Corporate Investigation in Malaysia. He was also the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of SMART College as well as Security Plus Academy.

Personal Life

Mr. Anand was born in Ave Maria Maternity in Petaling Jaya on 30 December 1956 to S. Ponnudurai and Say Wai Peng @ Sha Wai Bin. He was educated at La Salle Brickfields and PJ class of 1973 and later graduated with a Bachelor of Agribusiness in 1981 at University Putra Malaysia (UPM).

While gathering research material for his thesis in 1981, he met Madam Susan Valladaras, who he later married on 9th December 1987 at Saint Francis Xavier (SFX) church at Petaling Jaya.

Career and Legacy

Before SMART College

Having started as a certified New York money trader, Mr. Anand worked at Arab Malaysia Merchant Bank, Arab Malaysian Securities and was later posted to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah where he served for more than 2 years. Afterwards, Mr. Anand returned to the HQ and joined the money market treasuries, bond market and trader. He then joined SJ Securities before moving to Merril Lynch Australia and Merril Lynch Singapore. After that, he returned to Kuala Lumpur to work at Jardine Flemmings.

Gerbang Perdana

After working in various investment banks, Mr. Anand moved on to Gerbang Perdana, a construction company based in Petaling Jaya. He was one of the directors and played a role in the design and construction of the 2nd Integrated Custom Immigration Complex between Johor Bharu and Singapore. He was also involved in overseeing the development of the “Crooked Bridge Project” under the Chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail.

During the signing off of the bridge project, issues were faced whereby due to the lack of local companies or experts who could perform the sign off, a foreign company had to be commissioned. Displeased by this, the Chairman suggested that Mr. Anand, who at the time was the youngest board member, do something about the situation.

International Centre for Security Management (ICSM)

In 2005, Mr. Anand established a training and consulting company called the International Centre for Security Management to train and improve professional expertise in Law Enforcement, Security, Investigation and Safety industry in Malaysia. During this period, Mr. Anand created many events such as the First World Security Forum in 2006 which was officiated by the then Deputy PM Datuk Seri Najib.

In 2007, the forum brought global experts in the field of Law Enforcement, Security Investigation and Safety training for Officers in Charge of Police District (OCPD) in Kuala Lumpur to utilise Closed-circuit Televisions (CCTV) as crime prevention tools. This was officiated by the former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

The forum also held the 2nd World Security Forum in Singapore, partnering with Certis Cisco, which was officiated by both Malaysia and Singapore's Ministers of Home Affairs in 2008.

SMART College and Security Plus Academy

Unsatisfied with ICSM and wanting to bring change into the industry, Mr. Anand developed, wrote and gained Malaysia’s first accreditation from MQA for Diploma programs in Enforcement and Investigation in 2012. He then applied for a college and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) license, thus forming and founding SMART College as well as Security Plus Academy (SPA). Later on, more programs were introduced to SMART College that covered other industries such as occupational safety and health (OSH), protection management, industrial hygiene, computer science and digital marketing.

In the beginning, the two institutions started in Gasing Indah from 2 classrooms, 40 students to its 17,000sqf campus with over 400 students for SMART and 800 students for SPA who later worked in many fields in the government such as police, customs, immigration, firefighters, safety and private companies. Over the course of the institutions operating, SMART College has gained various achievements and milestones.

By 2015, SMART College conducted their first convocation at Royal Selangor Club, Kuala Lumpur with its 1st fully accredited Diploma in Enforcement by MQA. The year after, the first fully accredited Diploma in Corporate Investigation by MQA was officiated. Under Mr. Anand's leadership, SMART College would continue to thrive and achieve various feats.


In 2017, SMART College was accredited by FELDA under "Institusi tajaan FELDA". SMART College would later form educational collaborations with other institutions such as Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) and James Cook University Australia.

With UPNM, a memorandum of agreement was signed on the 13th of November 2017 to established a joint venture for developing an MBA in protection management and a Bachelor's Degree in Security and Defence. With James Cook University Australia on the other hand, a degree pathway for a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice was officiated.

On the 29th of July 2018, Mr. Anand Pon did a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Dato' Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun at Bukit Aman Police Headquarters. Additionally, SMART AMAR was established and inaugurated by Mr. Ruslan bin Tuan Mat, Director of the Community Education Division, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM).

In 2019, in conjunction with international Anti-Corruption Day on the 9th of December, Mr. Anand received the Anti-Corruption Champion Award (MAJAR) presented by Yang Berbahagia (YBhg) Datik Seri Azam Baki, who was the Malaysian Ant-Corruption Commission's deputy Chief of Operations.


On the 9th of July 2020, SMART College received a prestigious accreditation as an Occupational Safety and Health Certified Trained Centre by the Minister of Human Resources, YB Datuk Saravanan A/L Murugan. This award meant that SMART College has been acknowledged as one of the nine institutions that received recognition as a certified training centre for Health and Occupational Safety Officers in Malaysia. This also meant that SMART College's Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health had become an approved DOSH program.

During the 2022 Melaka Education Expo that was inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Utama Sulaiman MD Ali, at Ames Hotel in Melaka, SMART College had received an award for "Best Booth Design" alongside a campus visit from the Director of the Malaysian Department of Fire and Rescue, PKP JB Tuan Haji Nordin, whereby knowledge and experience on fire safety and inspection were shared by the Director.

The Melaka Education Expo 2022 inaugurated by the Chief Minister(Menteri Besar), Datuk Seri Utama Sulaiman Md Ali, at Ames Hotel in Melaka. PKPJB Tuan Haji Nordin, Director of the Department of Fire and Rescue Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, visited SMART College to graciously share his knowledge and experience on ‘Fire Safety and inspection’.


In 2023, the Community English Language Learning (C.E.L.L.) program was launched alongside YB Datuk Seri Johari Bin Abdul Ghani. The program aimed to engage and assist the youths in the Kampung Pandan area, where the campus is located, in learning English through Theatre and performing arts. In the same year, SMART College and the Malaysian Army Reserve, also known as Rejiman 515 Askar Wataniah conducted a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony with the goal of instilling discipline and readiness of students before entering the Law Enforcement industry. Through this, students were able to register for Wataniah and had access to first-hand military training during their studies.

Death

On the 29th of October 2023, Mr. Anand passed away following his treatment for his illness. This left a major impact on both SMART College and SPA as he was heavily involved in all matters regarding the two institutions.
