"Salazar's art aims to. . . ." What matters for Wikipedia is much less what he aspires to, much more what people independent of Salazar (curators, art historians/journalists/critics) say he has accomplished. Hoary (talk) 00:14, 1 September 2024 (UTC)

Allanrey "Migz" Salazar (born 1972) is a multi-awarded international Filipino contemporary visual artist. His work explores themes of individual struggle, faith, ecstasy, and the frailty of humankind, often using contrasting elements such as hard and soft or clean and dirty. Salazar's art aims to challenge conventional standards of beauty and resists straightforward narrative and interpretation, relying on allegory and metaphor.[1]

Background

[edit]

Allanrey "Migz" Salazar is a Filipino artist based in Paris. Born in the Philippines, he moved to Germany and France in 1997, where he briefly studied fine arts at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. After the global COVID-19 pandemic, Salazar returned to Manila[2], where he continues to pursue his passion for art and engages with young Filipino artists.

He was one of the few Filipino contemporary artists who were based in Paris during his stay in France. His recent works mark a deviation from abstract art towards cataclysmic biblical iconography with secular socio-religious and political narratives. His pieces often serve as visual satires addressing current socio-political issues and the human condition, reflecting themes of struggle, faith, ecstasy, and doom.[1]

Professional Career

[edit]

Allanrey "Migz" Salazar has exhibited extensively between 2005 and 2017, with solo exhibitions at French galleries and biennales throughout Europe and Southeast Asia.

Salazar's work has been included in several international art exhibits:

  • 10th Florence Biennale International Contemporary Art Exhibition, with the theme Art and the Polis[3] in 2015
  • 11th Florence Biennale International Contemporary Art Exhibition (eARTh: Creativity and Sustainability) in 2017[4]
  • 57th Venice Arte Biennale in 2017, in the "Anima Mundi" [5] exhibit by the Its Liquid Group
  • Barocco Salentino at the Biennale Internazionale D‘Arte Contemporanea[6] in 2020

Salazar is the first Filipino contemporary visual artist to date that won the (Gold & Marble) “Bust of Pablo Picasso” International Art Prize 2019 in Lecce, Italy and the (Gold & Ivory) “Bust of Emperor Julius Caesar” International Art Prize, Conferment for highest recognition in Arts for Human Rights, and the François-Marie Arouet Voltaire Price for Civil Rights and Social Commitments 2018 in Lecce and Brindisi, Italy[7].

Additionally, he was an honorary member of the Accademia Italia in Arte Nel Mondo Associazione Culturale[8] in 2018-2022, in Lecce, Italy.

Salazar is also a recipient of Philippine National Awards such as the 12th and 14th Ani ng Dangal (Harvest of Honors) in 2020 and 2022[9], awarded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts through the Malacañang Palace.

In the Philippines, Salazar has exhibited in local museums, including "In Search of Identity and Form" at the Yuchengco Museum in 2022, "Alaala sa Bagong Bayan" at the Rizal Museum in 2023, and "Lo and Behold" at the Makati Museum in 2024.
