Graham is a scientist and the co-founder, Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of LaGray Chemical Company Inc., a U.S.-based firm that established the first fully vertically integrated, GMP-compliant pharmaceutical manufacturing company in West Africa. Dr. Graham has over 15 years of experience in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries[1].
Through her work at LaGray, Dr. Graham has contributed to the availability of affordable healthcare solutions in sub-Saharan Africa. LaGray Chemical Company collaborates with institutions such as Howard University on drug discovery and development research, with a focus on making essential medicines accessible and sustainable in the region. Research areas under discussion include formulation development, bio-equivalence studies[2], and clinical research.
Dr. Graham also serves as the President of St. Karol School of Nursing in Ghana and works as a consultant on Good Manufacturing Practices for the United States Pharmacopoeia Convention (USP), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the West African Health Organization. Her career spans over 19 years in higher education and 15 years in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, where she has been involved in mentoring and promoting healthcare development in Africa.
Early life and education
[edit]Dr. Alexandra Graham was born in October 6, 1958 in Ibadan, Nigeria, to Sir Patrick Graham and Mrs. Hauwa Eva Graham. Just like her sister, a retired Chief Justice Amina Augie, Dr. Graham received her early education across various cities in Nigeria. She attended Abadina School in Ibadan, Hope Waddell Primary School in Calabar, Holy Rosary Primary School in Enugu, and Queen Amina College in Kaduna.
In 1981, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Bayero University, Kano, graduating with First Class Honors (Summa Cum Laude). She then completed her National Youth Service between 1982 and 1983 and served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant from 1983 to 1984.
Dr. Graham pursued further education at the University of Sussex, earning a Master of Science degree in Organic Chemistry in 1987. She continued her academic journey at the University of Lagos, where she completed her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1989.
In 2003, she earned an MBA in Global Technology Management from the American InterContinental University.
Career
[edit]Dr. Alexandra E. Graham is a scientist, pharmaceutical and finance executive, visionary entrepreneur, and global health advocate with over three decades of international experience. Her career spans industries including global health, pharmaceuticals, higher education, hospitality, and healthcare infrastructure development[3]
She has held prominent roles at several organizations, including Abbott Laboratories, LaGray Chemical Company, St. Karol School of Nursing,[4] and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Her work has focused on improving access to quality medicines and addressing the challenges of providing education for healthcare professionals in resource-constrained environments.
From 2016 to 2018, Dr. Graham served as a Science and Technology Policy Fellow at USAID, under the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), where she gained experience in science diplomacy, policy development, and U.S. government relations.
In recent years, Dr. Graham co-founded LaGray Finance, a diversified commercial finance company that offers innovative financing solutions to enterprises in healthcare and hospitality. The company specializes in business loans, equipment leasing, and commercial real estate financing, providing capital for projects up to $500 million. LaGray Finance collaborates with the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to support small businesses and enterprises in rural areas.
Personal life
[edit]Dr. Alexandra Graham was married to Mr. Gabriel Ode until their divorce in 1994. The couple had three children: Ema Eva Ode, Jacqueline Enode Ode, and Gabriella Elameyi Ode. In November 2000, she married Dr. Paul Lartey. Dr. Graham recently welcomed her first grandchild.
