Alejandro Condis (born September 26, 1988) is a Cuban-American-Spanish journalist. He has worked as a news anchor and reporter for Hispanic media outlets in the United States, including Telemundo and Univision. Since 2021, he has been working for Univision Nueva York as an anchor, reporter, and Correspondent with the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Alejandro Condis Mojena was born on September 26, 1988, in Havana, Cuba..[1]. He grew up in Centro Habana, one of the most marginalized neighborhoods in the Cuban capital, and is one of four siblings.

He studied at IPVCE “Vladimir Ilich Lenin.”[2] He then pursued a degree in Art History at the University of Havana[3], where he graduated and delivered the graduation speech for the Faculty of Arts and Letters[4].

After winning three academic scholarships, he briefly moved to Mexico City in August 2013 to pursue a Master's degree at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). However, he soon left the program to emigrate to the United States[5].

He arrived in the United States in October 2013, legally crossing the border from Nuevo Laredo to Laredo, Texas[6], under the "Wet Feet, Dry Feet" policy, which at the time allowed Cuban citizens to enter and obtain legal status in the United States.

Career

[edit]

Condis began his career in Miami, contributing as a commentator for América TeVe[7] starting in 2013. He later collaborated with the now-defunct MiraTV channel[8], where he eventually became the producer of a show hosted by the current U.S. Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar[9].

He later worked for MegaTV in Miami on a newscast founded by Salazar, where he also took on reporting and anchoring roles.[10].

Concurrently, Condis was an art critic for the newspaper El Nuevo Herald[11], where he wrote about visual arts, and he also worked in an art gallery in the Wynwood Art District.

In 2016, he served as the news anchor for Sobre todos los Géneros, the only Spanish-language TV show in the United States dedicated to the LGBTQ community[12][13]. The show earned the GLAAD Media Award[14][15].

In October 2018, Condis was hired by Telemundo as a multimedia reporter at their local station in Las Vegas[16], where he was responsible for writing, recording, and editing all of his reports. At Telemundo Las Vegas, he founded and hosted one of the first Spanish-language digital newscasts in the United States, Dale Play, in 2021[17][18].

In October 2021, he moved to New York City after being hired by Univision 41 News as an anchor and reporter[19]. He initially anchored the weekend newscasts and later became a co-anchor on the weekday evening newscasts. He was then promoted to Correspondent with the NYPD, becoming the first Univision New York journalist to hold this title[20]

Awards and Honors

[edit]

Condis has won 14 regional Emmy Awards, with 5 for his work in Las Vegas[21][22][23] and 9 in New York[24][25][26]. He has been nominated for these awards more than 40 times.

Personal Life

[edit]

Condis lives in Manhattan, New York City. He is openly gay[27] and enjoys exploring the city and participating in sports in his free time. He has been a fervent advocate for human rights in Cuba and has opposed the dictatorship that has ruled his homeland since 1959[28]
