Biography and Career

[edit]

Ale Santos was born in the city of Cruzeiro, in the interior of São Paulo, and grew up in the area known as Morro do Itagaçaba (or Morro da Cocada). It was at the age of 12 that he started writing his first stories after his school teacher introduced him to classic fantasy and Science Fiction. He developed a strong interest in stories like those of Sherlock Holmes, the barbarian Conan and the Knights of the Round Table.[5] lso around that age, the writer watched the comedy movie Cool Runnings, which inspired him to get into athletics, competing as a sprinter and winning state competitions, until he paused his athletic career at 18 to study advertising at a college in Lorena (São Paulo). That same movie also helped Alê identify as a Black person.[7]

Since 2009, the writer has been active onTwitter, which helped him become more well-known in Brazil.[10] In June 2018, a series of tweets about the history of Leopold II of Belgium, who was responsible for the deaths of millions of Congolese in the 19th and 20th centuries, went viral and reached millions of views on the platform. [11] The success of this and other tweets about Black peoples caught the attention of Brazilian publishers and led to the release of his first book "Rastros de Resistência" in 2019, which was inspired by some of the stories he shared on social media.[5] The rapper Emicida wrote the foreword for this book..[2]

Also in 2019, Alê Santos published a short story called "Cangona" in the anthology "Todo Mundo Tem uma Primeira Vez," which is based on the song of the same name performed by Clementina de Jesus.[12]

In 2021, the writer released his biggest hit so far: "O Último Ancestral", which tells a story in an afrofuturistic universe. The book will also be adapted into a Role-playing game (RPG) e and a TV series produced by RT Features, the company that made the Oscar-winning film Call Me By Your Name in 2018.[5]

At the end of 2023, Alê is releasing the book "A Malta Indomável," which is a parallel story to his last book "O Último Ancestral" and draws influences from Afro-Brazilian, riverine, and Indigenous mythologies. [5][13]

Alongside the gaucho artist Rafael Albuquerque, who designed the cover of O "Último Ancestral", Ale contributed as a writer to a comic book set in Brazil for Assassin's Creed called "La Bestia." This comic is part of the Assassin's Creed: Visionaries series and was released internationally in November 2023.[5][14][15]

Since 2023, the writer has been living in Belém (Pará), having previously resided in Guaratinguetá, in the countryside of São Paulo. [2][5]
