Aeroflot Flight 466 was a passenger flight within the Mineralnye Vody – Ashgabat – Tashkent route,[1] which on December 23, 1958, the Ilyushin Il-14 operated by the Uzbekistani group of Aeroflot, crashed during its approach to Tashkent, killing all 21 occupants.
Background
[edit]Aircraft
[edit]The aircraft involved was Ilyushin Il-14M, operated by the Uzbek group of Aeroflot, with the serial number being 6342007 and was registered as CCCP-61663. Manufactured in 1956, it was then delivered to Aeroflot on March 28, 1958, which it had logged about 3295 hours at the time of the accident.[1]
Description
[edit]The Il-14 departed from Ashgabat International Airport at 21:15 MST, with snowy weather. During the approach to Tashkent, the crew encountered poor weather with low visibility due to falling snow. The aircraft was cleared for the approach despite the poor conditions. The pilot radioed that he had visual contact with the runway, but performed a go-around at 10–15 m (33–49 ft) and attempted a second approach instead of diverting to another airport. During the second approach, the pilot was unable to locate the runway and then attempted a second go-around, but at 100–150 m (330–490 ft) the aircraft stalled, banked right and crashed in a snowy field.[1]
Investigation
[edit]The safety board had started an investigation privately, and had then determined for the cause to be pilot error.[citation needed]
