The Academy for Mathematical Sciences was established in 2023 as the fifth national academy of the UK.
Origins
[edit]Proposals for a new national academy were made out in the 2017 review of knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences The Era of Mathematics[1], authored by Philip Bond for EPSRC and known as the Bond review. The Big Mathematics Initiative (BMI) led by the Council for the Mathematical Sciences recommended a national academy be developed and produced a green paper as a community consultation document in 2021.[2]
The new academy was granted Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) status in October 2023. Later that year the UK government announced funding to establish an academy and invited competitive submissions to host the academy, with a consultation on the strategic priorities running in 2024. After the change of government, in September 2024, the funding was withdrawn but the academy was established and Dame Alison Etheridge appointed the first president.
