Abu Bakkar Mollick
[edit]Abu Bakkar Mallik was widely known throughout the country when he became the first Upazila Chairman in 1985 during Ershad's[1] regime. The then Local Government Minister, Shah Moazzem Hossain[2], passed a law in the National Assembly to remove him from his position. This led to a heated argument between Shah Moazzem Hossain and the then ministers, Air Vice Marshal M Aminul Islam and M Korban Ali[3], inside the National Assembly. This incident made headlines in the media. Subsequently, the newly elected Upazila Chairman, Abu Bakkar Mallik, was removed under this controversial law; however, the High Court declared it illegal. The return of Abu Bakkar Mallik following the High Court's verdict also became a topic of discussion. Before becoming the Upazila Chairman, he had been serving as the elected Chairman of Sonarang-Tongibari Union Parishad since 1983. He is the son of Majibur Rahman Mallik from the historic village of Sonarang. His younger brother, Ali Azgar Ripon Mallik, is the former General Secretary of the district BNP and currently serves as the President of Tongibari Upazila BNP.[4]
He passed away on Saturday (August 17) at around 5:30 pm while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. He is survived by his wife, five daughters, one son, and countless admirers. On Sunday (August 18), his funeral prayers were held at the Sonarang Government High School ground in Tongibari Upazila after Zuhr prayers. Later, he was laid to rest at the Sonarang Social Cemetery. Despite the rain, thousands of people gathered to pay their last respects and attend the funeral.[5]
