Dr. Abdul Wadood Qureshi, Sitara-e-Imtiaz [1] (Born February 21, 1952), is a distinguished journalist editor, analyst, columnist and author of six books and a booklets.

Early Life

Dr. Abdul Wadood Qureshi, was born into a religious and educated family in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. He is the son of Alhaj Abdul Ghafoor Qureshi, a prominent religious scholar. He completed his matriculation from Faiz-ul-Islam in Rawalpindi Board. He completed FA from Gordon College, Rawalpindi. After a long hiatus from academia, he returned to complete his MPhil in Urdu. He completed his PhD[2]. in Urdu from National University of Modern Languages.

After a long career active in the field of journalism, Dr. Abdul has taken a step back from contemporary media and is now more active on social media. He is currently working as a chief editor for Daily Asian News.

Legal Issues

He was detained by Rawalpindi Police on false charges of anti-state behavior due to which he had to take final exams for his FA degree from prison cell. Due to his anti establishment narrative and staunch critique of military interference in civilian supremacy Dr. Abdul faced legal issues with military courts. He was tried by the Military Court twice on allegation of spreading hatred against the Military Rule, in the form of question to (the then) Chief Martial Law Administrator Punjab Lt. Gen. Ghulam Jillani Khan. The case was still under consideration when the Military Government came to an end, and case met the same fate.

Personal Life

He married his wife Farah Iqbal in November,1991. He has 2 sons, one of whom is a prominent state council in High Court Islamabad.

Dr. Abdul Wadood visited following countries as part of delegates from Government of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Afghanistan, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Turkey and China.

  • Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence): Awarded by the Government of Pakistan on March 23, 2009, in recognition of his exceptional services in the field of journalism.
  • West Pakistan Civil Defence Governor Challenge Shield: Winner of the prestigious shield on August 28, 1971.
  • Journalist Award: Presented by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Muhammad Afzal Zullah.
  • Governor's Shield: Awarded by the Governor of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) in 1994 during his tenure as Media Consultant to the Government of NWFP.
  • Gold Medal: Presented by Akhbar Firoshan through Abbasi News Agency, Rawalpindi, for his contributions to the welfare of the Akhbar Firoshan community.
  • Children Friendly National Newspaper Editor Award (2006):
    • As Resident Editor, Daily Khabrain, Islamabad, awarded by "Sahil" on March 7, 2007, along with a cash prize of Rs. 20,000.
    • As Resident Editor, Daily Jinnah, Islamabad, awarded by "Sahil" on March 17, 2008, along with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000.
