Abathor is a videogame (2D pixel platform action) developed by Pow Pixel Studios, published by jandusoft and released in 2024. Abathor can be played by up to 4 players that will impersonate one of the heroes that try to save Atlantis from a horde of Demons that come from Abathor.[1]

The game is inspired by the classic videogames of the 90s, like Super Castlevania IV, reproducing the Pixel art stlye, resolution and gameplay from that golden decade of arcade videogames. There are several references to other videogames of that age, as the wagon from Donkey Kong Country. Abathor drives the players through more than 50 stages from 12 different zones. Each zone is different, with it's own lore and scenarios, and it's own boss as the final challenge of each zone.[2]

Abathor is a challenging game as they were the 90s arcade games. However there are different diffculty modes in order to allow different kind of gamers enjoy the experience of playing Abathor[3]

Story

The greed of the atlantians lead them to open the seald gates trying to get an endless source of power, they did not know that behaind those gates a horde of demons was waiting to see the sunlight again.

Abathor story is based on the greek myths over the Atlantis. Names, maps and places are based on the writings made by Plato and Crantor.[4]

Playable Characters

  • Crantor: overall character. Looks like a barabarian and takes his name from the philosopher Crantor
  • Sais: focused on defense. Looks like a Valkyrie and takes her name from the ancient city Sais
  • Critias: focused on agility. Misterius character wrapped in clothes, takes his name from the greek politician Critias
  • Azaes: focused on power. Half man / half demon, grown in Abathor and fighted demons all his life.

Reception

Abathor had a good reception, obtaining a 78 in Metacritic[5] and in Opencritic [6]

Collection edition and physical edition were distributed by Tesura Store.

Previously, in 2023, a demo of the game was launched with the name Abathor - Atlantis landing[7]
