AGI House is a collective of founder and researcher co-living houses focused on artificial intelligence (AI) research, entrepreneurship, and community building. It was founded by Jeremy Nixon and Andrej Karpathy, and is located primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area.[1]

Named after "Artificial General Intelligence" (AGI), which refers to AI systems with human-level cognitive abilities, AGI House serves as a hub for AI professionals, enthusiasts, and investors.

Origins as NeoGenesis

AGI House began in February 2022 when Jeremy Nixon, a Google Brain researcher, and Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI and former head of AI at Tesla Motors, leased an eight-bedroom mansion in Hillsborough, California. They named the community NeoGenesis, with the goal of fostering collaboration among AI researchers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts.[2][3] The mansion, valued at around $58 million, included features such as a koi pond, Zen garden, and wine cellar.[2]

Figures like Sergey Brin[4]

, Sam Altman, and others in the tech industry helped NeoGenesis gain a reputation for hosting events, hackathons, and conferences.[5]

Transition to AGI House

In late 2022, following increased public interest in AI technologies such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Jeremy Nixon rebranded NeoGenesis as AGI House to align with its focus on artificial general intelligence.[2] This shift reflected the community's goal of advancing AGI and its broader potential impact on society.[2]

During this time, the Hillsborough property remained a hub for AI activities. Nixon and Karpathy handed over the Hillsborough lease to Neogenesis Resident Tim Shi (Cofounder and CTO of Cresta) and house operations manager Rocky Yu. In 2023, they launched a second AGI House location in San Francisco's Twin Peaks (San Francisco) neighborhood to expand the concept and create a network of AI-focused communities.[2][7]

San Francisco AGI House

The San Francisco AGI House, located in the Twin Peaks (San Francisco) neighborhood, has views of the city. The property, previously occupied by tech communities, was revitalized by Jeremy Nixon as part of the AGI House expansion.[11]

The San Francisco location became a center for AI innovation, attracting entrepreneurs and researchers interested in AI. The house hosted events, hackathons, and workshops to encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing within the AI community.[11][12]
