3rd High School of Heraklion (Greek: 3ο Γενικό Λύκειο Ηρακλείου) is a public co-educational high school located in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, located next to the Labour Centre of Heraklion. The school moved to its present location in 1962, when the previous building, the Sotiras Church in Kornarou Square, was unable to host the students.[2]
History
[edit]The school was founded in 1931. In the 1962-63 school year, the Girls' High School that was housed in the Sotiras Church, also known as the Valide Mosque, which was demolished in the 70s, was relocated to the building on Demokratias Street and functioned as the 1st Girls' High School until 1976. It continued as Girls' 1st High School from 1976-77 until the school year 1978-79.
In 1979-80 it was converted into a co-ed High School and renamed 3rd. It operated as the 3rd General High School of Heraklion until 1997. From 1997-98 to 2005-06 it became a Unified High School and from this year 2006-07 it was again transformed into a General High School. In 2000, the construction of a New Wing on the Eastern Side of the yard began, which was deemed necessary to stop using underground classrooms.[3]
Extracurricular Activities
[edit]The school is well-known in the city for the extracurricular activities that it offers. The most notable clubs are the Health and Sports Club, which organises several excursions every year, and the Environment Club[4], which combines education with nature. Other clubs include the Sign Language Club, the Library Club, which organises the 4000-book library of the school and the several science and experiments clubs. Lastly, since the 2023-24 school year the institution is a European Parliament Ambassador School.
Identity
[edit]The basketball team of the school is a source of great pride for the students and they are currently the defending Crete champions[5]. Due to the competition, a rivalry with the 5th High School of Heraklion has been developed, while there is also a standing rivalry with the fellow Heraklion central high school, Kapetanakeio. It is the only high school in Crete to offer classes for students with hearing problems, and there is a culture of acceptance within the institution.
The school is generally considered progressive but also to have higher income students and thus there is a lot of criticism due to the increased amount of expensive school field trips that marginalise poorer students.
Notable Alumni
[edit]- Marina Satti, Greek Singer[6]
- Nikos Androulakis, PASOK president[7]
