History

[edit]

The regiment was formed in accordance with the order of the People's Commissariat of Defense of the USSR in the period from August 19 to September 1, 1939 in Novorossiysk. The formation was carried out on the basis of the 2nd battalion of the 221st Chernigov rifle regiment of the 74th Taman rifle division. On September 1, 1939, the regiment received the name of the 633rd Rifle Regiment and became part of the 157th Rifle Division. The regiment was based in Novorossiysk until September 13, 1941.

During the Great Patriotic War, by order of the People's Commissariat of Defense No. 104 of March 1, 1943, the regiment was transformed into the 237th Guards Rifle Regiment, and the entire 157th Rifle Division received the name of the 76th Guards Rifle Division.

By order of the Minister of the Armed Forces in 1949, March 1 was established as the annual holiday of the 237th Guards Rifle Torun Red Banner Regiment.

In 1946, the regiment was transformed into the 237th Guards Parachute Landing Torun Red Banner Regiment.

On June 22, 2001, in accordance with the directive of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the regiment was disbanded, and its Battle Banner was transferred to the Museum of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation for storage. On March 2, 2002, for the first time in the history of the Armed Forces of Russia, the regiment's annual holiday was held, despite its disbandment..[1]

In 2021, the regiment was revived as part of the 76th Guards Air Assault Division.
