Draft:2024 Arab-Islamic Summit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2024 Arab-Islamic Summit was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also the Kingdom's Prime Minister, on November 11. Organized by Saudi Arabia as an independent effort, the summit addressed critical regional issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Lebanon. It built upon the efforts of the previous summit in 2023 and included commitments to humanitarian support, regional stability, and resolutions based on United Nations guidelines. While it aligned with the objectives of both the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), it was not officially stated to be conducted under their auspices.[1]

Background

[edit]

More than 50 leaders of Arab and Islamic nations are taking part in the summit called for by Riyadh.

Key points

[edit]

In the opening speech at the summit on Monday, bin Salman condemned “the genocide” against the Palestinian people by Israel. [2]

“The Kingdom reaffirms its condemnation and utter rejection of the genocide perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian people, which has resulted in over 150,000 martyrs, wounded, and missing, most of them women and children,” bin Salman said, according to a speech provided by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, emphasized the urgent implementation of United nations Security Council Resolution 2735, which calls for a ceasefire and adequate and sustainable humanitarian aid to all areas of the Gaza strip.[3]
