The 1968 Indonesian presidential election was the third vote to elect the President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the 1968–1973 term.

Background

[edit]

This presidential election was held because Sukarno was impeached by the MPRS (Provisional People's Consultative Assembly) in 1967. Suharto was officially elected President of Indonesia on March 27, 1968, after previously holding the position of Acting President of Indonesia since 1967, after Sukarno was officially impeached by the MPRS.[citation needed]

Since G30PKI, Cabinet changes have been very frequent, But finally, Due to the demands of the people, namely TRITURA, President Sukarno's presidential mandate was revoked by the MPRS, Based on the deliberation by the MPRS and finally replaced by Suharto, Sukarno was under house arrest until the end of his life.[citation needed]

Suharto, who was then Acting President, at that time also to secure the condition of Indonesia after G30PKI. However, the demands and pressure of the people on Sukarno made Sukarno's presidential mandate revoked by the MPRS.[citation needed]
