The European School of Lille Métropole Jacques Delors (French: École Européenne de Lille Métropole Jacques Delors), or EELM, is a public Accredited European School in Marcq-en-Baroeul, France. The school started in 2019 after the creation was approved by the higher council of the general secretariat of the European Schools on December 6, 2017. The school prepares students for the multilingual European Baccalaureate as its secondary school leaving qualification. The school is gradually opening up its levels and by September 2025, it will finally open all classes, making the school an all-through school.[1][2]
History
[edit]The MEL became interested in having a European School with their interest to host several European Union institutions and signify the city of Lille's status as a capital in Northern Europe.[3][1] However after the Métropole Européenne de Lille's request to host the European Medicines Agency in Lille due to the agency relocating from London as a result of Brexit was rejected due to the lack of proper affordable international schooling for the staff members of the instituion, increased interest followed the topic. The File of General Interest for the Creation of the Accredited European School of Lille was unanimously approved by the higher council of the general secretariat of the European Schools at its meeting of December 6, 2017.[3] The European School of Lille Métropole first started in temporary buildings in the Ealing Park, Avenue du Dr. Calmette, opposing the Lycée Yves Kernanec in September 2019.
The construction of the new school campus started in 2019 and was done by GBL Architectes, with a budget of €25 million, paid by the Région Hauts-de-France and the Métropole Européene de Lille.[4] The new campus with a REV3 certification [5][6]was built on a former rugby pitch, adjascent to the Lycée Yves Kernanec, whose "Restaurant Scolaire" (School Restaurant / Canteen) also serves the secondary students of EELM.[7]
The European School of Lille is expected to open all its classes by the school year 2025 with the opening of the S7 classes. (As of now the highest class is S6; ages 16-17).[8]
Education
[edit]The European School of Lille Métropole offers education in 2 primary language sections, English and French, according to the primary language of the student. The school follows the European Schools curriculum, which is set by Schola Europaea. The school is bilingual and welcomes children from age 4 till 17 (Expected to be 18 by 2026).[8]
Nursery Cycle (M1-M2)
[edit]The students follow the "Early Education Programme" set by Schola Europaea[2], which is made up of 4 essential learning aspects: physical, psychological, social and cognitive development. The cycle lasts for 2 years and the students then graduate to Primary school.

[edit]Students follow a curriculum prmarily based on Language 1, Mathematics and the First Foreign Language (English or French) alongside other aesthetic subjects.[9]

Secondary Cycle (S1-S7)
[edit]In the Secondary cycle of the European School of Lille Métropole Jacques Delors, the timetable of students varies based on their class and the options choosen. The timetable includes between 31 and 35 periods of 45 minutes per week (with exceptions allowed), spread over 5 days. The school day lasts from 08:15 to 17:15, which is also subjected to change based on the students' timetables[2].

Assessment
[edit]Students are assessed using alphabetical marks (A, B, C, D, E, F, Fx) as part of the European Curriculum.

Options
[edit]Students get to choose from Latin, ICT, economics (taught in L2), Language 4 (Italian) and art education as long as their timetables satisfy the 35 periods per week limit. In addition, students have the choice to choose from a general 4 periods a week mathematics course and a more advanced 6 periods a week mathematics course.[2]
Assessment
[edit]Pupils are assessed with numerical half-marks out of 10.
Orientation Cycle (S6-S7)
[edit]The orientation cycle prepares students for the European Baccalaureate, that is made of the grades of the continious assessment done over the S6 and S7 years and the final exams that take place in S7. The European School of Lille Métropole is expected to hold its first European Baccalaureate session in the 2025/26 academic year.[2]

[edit]The European School of Lille Métropole Jacques Delors is located in a newly constructed REV3 certified building that is equipped with:[8]

Special Projects + Programmes

S5 Student Mobility
[edit]The S5 Student Mobility programme allows all students in S5 who meet conditions to spend a time varying from 6 weeks to 3 months in a European School abroad.[2]
Winterfest
[edit]The Winterfest is an event that takes place around the Holiday season is December. This involves a Holiday Market set up by students, performances, and other activities such as face painting.
Mai á Vélo (May in Bike)
[edit]Mai á Vélo takes place on the month of May, during which students, teachers and parents are encouraged to bike to school and for other errands in day-to-day life.
Student Exchanges
[edit]The school, being a European School which has been accredited by the Erasmus+ programme, benefits from Student Exchanges all year round from other European Schools as well as international schools which are part of the Erasmus+ programme.[10]
