Dora Marie Sigar (21 September 1919 – 22 December 2008) was an Indonesian nurse, activist, and homemaker.

Early life and education

[edit]

Sigar was born on 21 September 1919 in Lawongan, Minahasa Regency, as the child of Philip Frederik Laurens Sigar (1885–1946), a government official and member of Volksraad, and Cornelie Emilia Maengkom.[1][2][3] They both came from a bureaucrat's family.[1] Sigar was of Minahasan and German descent.[1] At the age of 12, she moved to Netherlands to continued higher school education at the Christelijk Hogere Burgerschool in Utrecht.[1][2] Sigar showed her intelligence at a young age.[1] There, she studied post-surgical nursing and became active in student activities advocating for Indonesian rights, shaping her career and outlook as an educated and dedicated woman.[1][2]

Personal life

[edit]

Sigar was met with Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, an economist, during meeting organized by Indonesia Christen Jongeren in 1943.[2][3] He then became her patient after undergoing colon surgery due to tumor.[1][2] In 1945, Djojohadikusumo returned to Indonesia and Sigar followed a year later.[2] They married on 7 January 1946 in Matraman, East Jakarta, and had two sons, Prabowo Subianto (born 1951), a politician who served as the eighth president of Indonesia, and Hashim Djojohadikusumo (born 1953), a businessman; and two daughters, Biantiningsih Miderawati Djiwandono (born 1946) and Maryani Ekowati Lemaistre (born 1948).[1][4][5][2][3] They faced serious political challenges in the post-independence period of Indonesia, and their marriage lasted until Djojohadikusumo's death in March 2001.[1]

Career

[edit]

After returned to Indonesia, Sigar became a homemaker and focus on her family, and supporting her husband's career as an economist and political figure.[1]

When Sumitro Djojohadikusumo served in the government cabinet, Sigar played the role of the backbone of the family, especially when he was a fugitive due to alleged political and economic cases.[1]

Death

[edit]

Sigar died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on 22 December 2008 at 18:00 PM after being treated for a year due to old age and lymphoma at the age of 89.[4][5][1][2] She was buried at Tanah Kusir Cemetery on 23 December.[5]
