Diabetes Prize for Excellence

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diabetes Prize for Excellence is an international prize awarded annually by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD)[1] in collaboration with the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The award recognizes extraordinary research at the intersection of obesity and diabetes and highlights breakthrough discoveries that improve the understanding and treatment of these diseases.[2]

History and Background

[edit]

The award was established in 2015[3] to highlight the link between obesity and type 2 diabetes, two global health challenges that often occur together. EASO and the Novo Nordisk Foundation want to use the award to promote research that improves treatment options and reduces the incidence of these diseases.[4]

Criteria and Selection

[edit]

For nomination of the award, the recipient must be selected on the basis of:[5]

  • Candidates must be a member of EASD
  • Candidates can be from any country
  • There are no age restrictions
  • Board members of EASD or the Novo Nordisk Foundation cannot be nominated.
  • Only employees of universities, hospitals or other non-profit institutions will be considered
  • The candidates must be active in diabetes research and continue their research activity for the next 5 years.

Proposals for candidates are received globally and assessed by an expert panel appointed by EASO and the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
