Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou (born April 3, 1959), known by the mononym DARIA, is an American singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and performer in the genres of world music, American folk, Andean folk music, protest and children’s music.[1][2]

Career

Folk and protest music

Growing up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, DARIA was active with the Bucks County Folksong Society. As a teenager, she traveled the United States, blending in various folk music types.[3][4]

Like many other young protest singers, DARIA performed at The People's Voice Coffeehouse in New York City and contributed to Sing Out! Magazine, where she coordinated the Friends of Sing Out!.[5]

Performances and music career

“When Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou makes music, the world listens – literally![6][7] The musician has traveled to more than 18 countries, introducing children to music and musical instruments.” writes the Christian Science Monitor in their news section.[8]

DARIA has significantly contributed to music, including American folk, Andean folk music, protest songs, and children's music. She is renowned for her educational materials, specifically her "I Have A Dream" song for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, included in the Harcourt curriculum for first and second graders.[9]

Educational work

In 2002, Daria received a grant to create free bilingual music resources for refugees fleeing Ukraine, as well as for Spanish-speaking immigrants to the US.[10] Her awards include the Gold Parent and Teacher's Choice Award for her Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) store.[11][12][13]

DARIA’s discography includes albums and songs that exhibit her musical influences and voice for social justice. She has won over a dozen prestigious awards in both the educational and entertainment fields, including multiple Parent’s Choice Awards.[14]
