On March 15, 2025 at approximately 1:48 AM local time, a section of the Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge, which was under construction, collapsed onto Rama II Road in the Chom Thong district of Bangkok, Thailand. The disaster resulted in seven confirmed fatalities, sixteen injuries, and an estimated thirty individuals trapped beneath the rubble.[1]

Disaster

[edit]

In the early hours of March 15, 2025, a concrete beam structure from the Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge construction project crashed down upon the existing expressway bridge. The collapse site was situated roughly 200 meters from a tollbooth, along a segment of the Rama IIIDao Khanong Expressway development. Seven fatalities and sixteen injuries were confirmed, and thirty individuals were believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.[1][2][3]

The collapse entirely severed the expressway, which serves as a transportation connection to Bangkok's Bang Khun Thian, Chom Thong, and Bang Mod districts. Additionally, Chom Thong Burana Road, which intersects with Rama II Road at site of the bridge's construction, was completely obstructed across all lanes.[1]

Recovery

[edit]

When authorities arrived, emergency personnel from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department along with the Poh Teck Tung Foundation had already initiated rescue operations. Search and rescue efforts commenced immediately following the collapse, with specialized teams proceeding carefully due to potential secondary collapses from destabilized structures. The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department deployed specialized rescue equipment and search and rescue dogs to aid in locating survivors and recovering victims. Rescue operations continued throughout the day as emergency crews worked to locate approximately thirty individuals believed to be trapped beneath the debris.[1][4]
