Mission

[edit]

The Cybersmile Foundation believe that everybody should have the right to access and enjoy the benefits that our new connected digital world offers – without the fear of bullying, threats and abuse.[5]

The organization believes that cyberbullying, harassment and digital abuse is holding many people back from enjoying the benefits that access to the internet can provide.

Cybersmile believes that our current online environment lacks the balance and social rules of engagement that have been cultivated over generations, governing the behavior and relationships in the communities where we live, play and work – the physical world.

The Cybersmile Foundation work to help people realize their true potential by supporting those that are bullied and abused online, changing the behavior of the bullies themselves and through education – preparing this and further generations for a safe and positive digital future.[6]

Activities

[edit]

Support

[edit]

The Cybersmile Foundation operates a Global Support Service which provides internet users with support for cyberbullying and online abuse related problems around the world. Cybersmile support advisors are trained volunteers and most have been targeted by cyberbullying themselves.[7][8][9]

Education

[edit]

The Cybersmile Foundation provides online educational resources covering topics including cyberbullying, doxing, netiquette, mental health, gaming, online security and digital citizenship.[10]

The organization provides educational content for schools. Cybersmile Ambassadors also participate in workshops and give talks to children about the dangers of cyberbullying.[11][12]

In November 2017, Cybersmile Parenting and Youth Development Advisor Dr. Deborah Gilboa organized a TedxYouth conference in Pittsburgh to discuss new ideas and the impact of the internet on young people.[13][14] A number of speakers participated in the event including author and educational speaker Cindy Pierce, discussing themes around building social courage.[15][16]

In September 2017, Cybersmile announced the launch of its Advisory Panel with a number of industry experts in fields such as gaming, education, research, internet law and technology.[18][19][20]

In October 2017, Cybersmile was invited to participate in Disney-ABC’s #ChooseKindness initiative for National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month.[21][22] Cybersmile representative Laura Lewandowski discussed teen mental health and the organization’s work with news anchor Cheryl Jennings as part of ABC7’s “Beyond the Headlines” roundtable special.[23]
