Bilateral relations between Colombia and Latvia were established in 1995.[1] Both countries are members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the United Nations.
History
[edit]On July 8, 1922, Colombia initially recognized Latvia's independence. However in 1940, Colombia did not recognize the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states, which included Latvia. On September 6, 1991, Colombia recognized the restoration of Latvian independence from the Soviet Union. Four years later on July 19, 1995, Colombia and Latvia established diplomatic relations.[2]
In April 2016, Director of Europe, Juan Guillermo Castro, escorted by the Ambassador of Colombia, Victoria Gonzalez held a meeting with the Director of Bilateral Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Rets Plesums to evaluate the topics on the bilateral agenda.[3] On July 8, 2022, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs lifted the Colombian flag at its headquarters during the celebration of 100 years of the de jure recognition of Latvia.[4] On June 13, 2023, Political Director Andžejs Viļumsons joined the 5th Political Consultations in Bogotá. Both Colombian and Latvian officials showed their readiness to expand collaboration in terms of higher education, forestry, information and communicating technologies.[5][6]
