Cloudfone is a defunct Philippine mobile phone and consumer electronics brand by Cellprime Inc. established by Eric Yu in 2010.

History

[edit]

Cloudfone was founded by the CEO of Cellprime, Eric Yu, in 2010. Cellprime Inc. started as an exclusive seller of Globe phone cards and SIM cards. Yu then decided to enter the local mobile market with premium but affordable devices. His first devices, the Cloudfone Ice and the QWERTY Touch, were priced at 7,000 when smartphones at the time were priced "around ₱20,000 to ₱ 30,000".[1]

By 2015, the brand had grown 199.8% in volume and 163.8% in value.[1] They expanded with partnerships with different brands such as ABS-CBN Mobile, Spotify, and Hyundai.[2][3][4] In 2017, they were the fourth-leading smartphone brand in the country, with 39% revenue growth and a 21% market share.[5]

Throughout its run, Cloudfone faced competition from foreign brands. Chinese brands such as Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Realme continued to enter the Philippine market with cheaper products.[5][6][7] By the early 2020s, Cloudfone had stopped releasing phones as competition from foreign brands won out.[7][6]

Products

[edit]

Cloudfone offered affordable Android smartphones. These smartphones were often dual-core or quad-core Android powered.[8] In 2014, they released the Epic 7.0, the first local Intel-based device.[9] In 2017, they partnered with the NBA to release the Cloudfone NBA Edition, a NBA-themed smartphone in Southeast Asia, containing NBA Live, NBA League Pass, and other NBA-themed accessories.[10][11]

Cloudfone also offered tablet computers. The Cloud Pad One 7.0, released in 2015, was the first Android Lollipop tablet in the country.[1][12] They also offered tablets that were compatible with both Android and Microsoft Windows operating systems.[1][13]

Sponsorships

[edit]

In 2015, Cloudfone applied to sponsor its own PBA D-League team, with plans of drafting their brand ambassador Xian Lim to the team.[14] However, their application was denied as they missed the deadline for application.[15] In 2017, they sponsored a PBA event, the Obstacle Challenge, during the PBA's 2017 All-Star Week.[16]

In 2017, Cloudfone was the technology sponsor of the Philippine Super Liga (PSL).[17] PSL coaches were given Cloudpad X tablets that they could use for calling timeouts, substitutions and challenges.[18]
