From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chester Ismay is an American data professional and educator with a background in data science, statistical modeling, and machine learning. He served as the Senior Director of Data Science Education at Flatiron School. Ismay has co-authored several R packages, including infer, fivethirtyeight, thesisdown, and moderndive.

Education

[edit]

Ismay earned his PhD in Statistics from Arizona State University in 2013. He previously received an MS in Statistics from Northern Arizona University in 2008 and a BS in Computational & Applied Mathematics from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 2006.[1]

Career

[edit]

Ismay worked at DataRobot as a Data Science Evangelist from July 2019 to June 2021. He led both in-person and virtual workshops on data science and machine learning, oversaw a team of trainers, and developed and revised curriculum using Python, R, SQL, and the DataRobot platform.[2]

Prior to his role at DataRobot, Ismay was the Head of Content Development at DataCamp from February 2019 to July 2019. In this position, he managed a team of content developers, built tools for easier content review, and automated workflows to improve efficiency. He also served as a (Senior) Curriculum Lead at DataCamp from June 2017 to March 2019.[3]

Teaching

[edit]

Ismay has authored DataCamp courses, including "Joining Data in SQL," "Programming with dplyr," and "Data Storytelling via the tidyverse." He has also edited and project-managed other courses such as "Machine Learning for Finance in Python," "Model Validation in Python," "Machine Learning in the Tidyverse," "RNNs for Language Modeling in Python," "Modeling with Data in the Tidyverse," "Communicating with Data in the Tidyverse," and "A/B Testing in R," among others.[4]

He has conducted workshops, including "Statistical Inference: A Tidy Approach" and "A Fully Customizable Textbook for Introductory Statistics/Data Science Courses." Chester has also delivered talks on topics such as "Creating the fivethirtyeight R package" and "Teaching Introductory Statistics Using the tidyverse via bookdown."[5]

Ismay has taught courses such as "Intro to Probability & Stats" at Reed College, "Social Statistics" at Pacific University, "Data Analysis" at Ripon College, and "Computer Science I (C++)" at Ripon College.[6]

Projects

[edit]

Ismay co-authored the textbook "Statistical Inference via Data Science: A ModernDive into R and the Tidyverse," published by CRC Press in December 2019. He also created "Getting used to R, RStudio, and R Markdown."[7]
