Opposed speedy move request

[edit]
Oppose renaming of men's soccer-specific categories only. Valparaiso dropped men's soccer after the 2019 season, more than a year before abandoning the Crusaders nickname. The standard for pages and categories on defunct college sports teams is to use whatever athletic branding was used in the last season of play. See, e.g., Detroit Titans football instead of "Detroit Mercy Titans", Marquette Golden Avalanche football instead of "Marquette Golden Eagles", and Category:Long Island Blackbirds football instead of "LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds" (in this last case, the program was shut down well before LIU's Post campus even existed, and even longer before the Brooklyn campus changed its athletic brand to "LIU Brooklyn"). All other categories can be renamed. The non-gendered soccer category can be renamed because Valpo continues to sponsor women's soccer. — Dale Arnett (talk) 08:16, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As nominator, I agree with User:Dale Arnett. I didn't realize that Valpo dropped soccer after 2019; I'm aware of preserving historical names if the program in question was dropped before the nickname change. I've removed the CfR tags from those categories. SportsGuy789 (talk) 17:39, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Valpo dropped only men's soccer. It still has a women's soccer team; in fact, that team played its first match of the 2021 season today (August 13). See the team schedule at Valpo's official athletics site. Note that I said the non-gendered category could be renamed. There's currently one woman in said category, who turns out to have been a former Valpo women's coach. I'll go ahead and create categories for Valpo women's soccer with the "Beacons" nickname, noting the nickname change. — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:48, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Said categories created. — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:57, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
