Taxonomy: For all marine species, Project Gastropods uses the taxonomy in the online database WoRMS. When starting a new article, do not use sources of taxonomic information that predate the 2017 revision for all gastropod groups ("Revised Classification, Nomenclator and Typification of Gastropod and Monoplacophoran Families" by Philippe Bouchet & Jean-Pierre Rocroi, Bernhard Hausdorf, Andrzej Kaim, Yasunori Kano, Alexander Nützel, Pavel Parkhaev, Michael Schrödl and Ellen E. Strong in Malacologia, 2017, 61(1–2): 1–526.) (can be dowloaded at Researchgate.net), substituting the previous classification of 2005 Taxonomy of the Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005). Reasoning and name of the category[edit]

Hello User:Abyssal, why this category has such a strange name "Prehistoric gastropods by taxon"? (All articles of animals are virtually taxons.) Why this category even exist? Especially when you already created useful category Category:Gastropod families, that include all categories included here. The name of the category says nothing. If we could keep the same content of this category, then we could rename it to "Prehistoric gastropod families". But is it useful to broke complex category "Gastropod families" into extant and prehistoric ones? --Snek01 (talk) 16:06, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't recall creating this category, but if I had to guess I would guess that its 100+ subcategories had been cluttering up Category:Prehistoric gastropods to the point of unusability. I don't have any specific opinions about what's to be done with it. I'll leave that for the snail people. :) Abyssal (talk) 01:01, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I agree with upmerging Category:Prehistoric gastropods by taxon into the Category:Prehistoric gastropods. --Snek01 (talk) 11:38, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This category includes only families of extinct species. Therefore, if the category name has to be changed, it would better be named "Category:Prehistoric gastropod families" or "Category: Extinct gastropod familes". JoJan (talk) 14:36, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
