Possible rename
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
As currently structured, this category is a subcategory of Category:Political fiction, and is thus meant for scripted drama or comedy series which present a fictionalized portrait of politics — however, due to the ambiguity of its current name it's often misused for news and talk and documentary series about real-world politics as well. There may be a valid case to be made that there should be a category for that kind of series too, but the current iteration of this category is not the correct place for them, because they're not fiction — and regardless, political non-fiction series should not be mixed with scripted fiction series in the same category.
Accordingly, I'd like to initiate a discussion about how best to handle this. Should we:
- Split it up into separate subcategories for political fiction and political non-fiction series?
- Rename the current category to make its "fiction" intentions clearer, but don't create a new category for the non-fiction kind because Category:News television series is already sufficient?
- Leave everything as is and just watch as needed to clean up misfiled entries? Bearcat (talk) 18:01, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
The category has no introduction to explain its scope, so mistakes are going to happen. I suggest to write a short note that it should cover "Television series featuring political fiction". Documentaries about politics have their own category, the underpopulated Category:Documentaries about politics which is supposed to cover examples from television and radio. - Well, in my experience, even categories that do have usage notes on the main category page still get misused, because many users don't actually check for or read usage notes before applying whatever categories they think are applicable. (For example, even with a usage note clarifying that Category:Biography is meant for articles about the genre of biography rather than for biographical articles about people, we still have to remove an average of somewhere between 10 and 20 biographical articles about people per month from that category.) So I don't know if adding an "introduction to explain its scope" is really all we need to do to solve the problem. Bearcat (talk) 18:19, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Aren't Television series by their nature episodic, so documentaries and news coverage really doesn't belong in this category. I strongly suggest going with option 4 (Write a blurb explaining what constitutes membership in the category) and Option 3 (Patrol for misfiled entries) with a side of option 5 (Educate editors who mid-file the difference). - I think the category should be renamed to make its intent clearer. No matter what we try to do to show editors what this category is for, we'll get people who file pages in based on just the name without reading any of it. No opinion on whether a new category should be created for political non-fiction shows. Jackmcbarn (talk) 00:14, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
- Rename seems appropriate. RFC bot summoned me here, and when I saw the RfC, I automatically assumed that this was going to be a discussion about non-fiction TV series. I can't think of any good suggestions, though. "Political fiction on television" and "Political fiction television series" are the best I've got. We should make this category's purpose clearer to editors. Ideally, they shouldn't have to read any notes to understand a category's topic. I guess this is option #2. Category:British political television series
[edit]There has been some recent action here but the proposed rename (2014?) seems not to be welcomed.
I draw attention to this because, as has been remarked on elsewhere, one of the subcategories - Category:British political television series - contains a number of series which are undoubtedly political television series originating in Britain, but which are not, by any stretch of definition, "drama".
Perhaps someone with Wikiauthority could take a look at this issue? AnOpenMedium (talk) 09:47, 18 August 2017 (UTC)
