Mixture[edit]

This category contains a mixture of "People from" categories and "people associated with" categories. I am thinking there might be scope for a separate Category:People by island in Scotland. Tim! (talk) 06:40, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I am being dense but could you specify what the difference would be? Ben MacDui 16:30, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There appear to be two different schemes in use, e.g. Category:People from Orkney and Category:People associated with Orkney, the latter states it is for "People resident of Orkney, or who have a close association with Orkney but who are not necessarily Natives of Orkney." My proposed category would contain the "natives", this category would be retained for the more general people. Tim! (talk) 20:09, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK - I understand the logic - and I believe there should be a top-level category within which all "from" and "associated with" Scottish islands would be contained. This one? As an example:
Category:People from Orkney and Category:People associated with Orkney are contained within Category:Orkney
Category:People from Orkney is also within Category:People from Scottish islands
Category:People associated with Orkney is also within Category:People associated with Scottish islands
Category:People from Scottish islands is also within Category:People associated with Scottish islands
I don't have any in-principle objection, it is certainly more consistent, but perhaps a bit over elaborate? Ben MacDui 08:51, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A fair point. I suppose under the status quo eventually a category such as Category:People from the Isle of Arran will move down into Category:People associated with the Isle of Arran. Tim! (talk) 20:48, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
