Some organizations miss out
[edit]What about organizations, such as Tearfund, which have branches in a number of countries, but don't have individual pages for those branches? Sometimes such a page is not warranted, but it means they don't appear in the relevant national organization category. --Singkong2005 03:23, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
- People will just have to find them through global subject area categories, links from articles etc. There are many classes of article which do not belong in the national categories. CalJW 00:42, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
Spelling using S or Z
[edit]Each country uses either the -s- or -z- spelling for all its organisations/organizations categories. UK and connected nations use -s-, US and connected nations use -z-.
In English Wikipedia, the intention is to have a category redirect for the other spelling corresponding to every organisations category. User:BrownHairedGirl set these up using a bot a few years ago, but they may of course be missing for any newly-created organisations categories.
An RFC was attempted in 2019 to standardise these: Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 153#RFC: spelling of "organisation"/"organization" in descriptive category names. However, this did not gain consensus.
Some countries' spellings were decided at a full WP:CFD discussion, e.g.
- France -> Z (2017)
For other countries, the current spelling is a historical accident based on what was predominantly used first. They would need a full CFD for each country hierarchy to change over. Such discussions have proved contentious in the past.
However, if new categories are added, they should match the majority pattern within the country hierarchy, and any exceptions can be speedily renamed. – Fayenatic London 21:42, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
