[edit]I've updated the user box with a new one. The old one, {{user religion|LDS}}, didn't work. Jaksmata 17:40, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
LDS format question
[edit]Chanceinator asked me this question on my talk page ([1]) and I am going to answer it here, since it could impact this category:
- I noticed (or at least think I did?) that you started the category for LDS wikipedians
- I noticed in the definition of Latter Day Saint that it refers to the movement while Latter-day Saint refers to a member of the Salt Lake-based The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. To conform to wikipedia formatting (as well as the LDS Church formatting of "Latter-day Saint,"), do you think we should move/retitle the category? Thanks!
I didn't start the category, I just made the user box... Short answer: I'm not sure. Long answer: I think "Latter Day Saints" is a group that includes "Latter-day Saints". While most of the users in the category identify themselves specifically as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there are a few that don't mention to which (if any) of the organizations they belong. I don't think it's inaccurate to refer to any of them as "Latter Day Saints".
A Wikipedia category purist (if such a thing exists) would create a sub-category of "Latter-day Saint Wikipedians" below "Latter Day Saint Wikipedians". The user box could then be modified to add users to the new (sub) category. People who don't use the box would have to move themselves, if they so desire. Jaksmata 20:24, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
I think that, as the two userboxes which link to this category refer specifically to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, either a) the name of the category should be changed to "Latter-day Saint Wikipedians", or b) the category should include userboxes for other sects in the Latter Day Saint movement. (Personally I would prefer the former.) EmCat24 (talk) 12:08, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Category:Latter Day Saint Wikipedians → Category:Latter-day Saint Wikipedians – All userboxes associated with this category refer only to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the largest denomination within the larger Latter Day Saint movement. As EmCat24 pointed out two years ago (see immediately above), our options are to either include members of other Latter Day Saint denominations within this category, or change the name accordingly. Both EmCat and myself would prefer that we change the name and not include other denominations; my personal reasoning as follows:
- The only other notable Latter Day Saint denomination, aside from the polygamous cults, is the Community of Christ (hereafter "CoC"). The two have become increasingly different in both practices/procedure and belief since the schism, and because the CoC is much smaller than the LDS Church, listing that minority among a large class of Latter-day Saints would mislead readers into assuming that the CoC members listed are more-or-less identical in belief to the Latter-day Saints.
- This category is, in essence, being used to list Wikipedians who are adherents of Mormonism. Quoting the article on that topic, "Mormonism is a form of Christian primitivism that shares a common set of beliefs with the rest of the Latter Day Saint movement, including use of, and belief in, the Bible, as well as other religious texts including the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants. It differs from other Latter Day Saint movement traditions (such as the Community of Christ)." Thus, it appears that the word "Mormonism" is only applied to the form of Christianity practiced by the LDS Church, and this definition is consistent with the way I have heard the term used.
- The only userbox for another Latter Day Saint denomination isn't actually in use on any userpages.
