I received a response from Wikimedia foundation's legal counsel a while ago regarding a category naming dispute. The gist of the response was that categorizing living people in this category is only proper and legal if "fully sourced and documented AND not a violation of any other policies." In other words, beside clear libel, showing a disfavour to somebody without support in a standard could get us in trouble. The response did not conclude on the debate in progress. --GunnarRene 18:09, 15 March 2007 (UTC) GunnarRene18:49, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think the current lead is good too: This category contains people whose past or present membership in the Ku Klux Klan has been self-proclaimed or reported by a reliable information source.--GunnarRene18:11, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Following the logic of including any who themselves publicly admit to being a Klan member, shouldn't we distinguish between those who are current members and/or espoused the group's tenets et al up till the time of their death, and those who joined but later themselves strongly and publicly disavowed the group and its tenets and/or activities. Not everyone who was confirmed as a Catholic, for example, should be in a category of Catholics. If one consciously gives up smoking, one is a former smoker, and it would be unreasonable to put that person into a category of smokers. If a gay person chooses to go through conversion therapy and lives a heterosexual life, they would be categorized as such, and both heterosexual and homosexual categorization would be misleading.
I propose a new Category for Klan members who later disavowed the Klan, with those members of this list who have done so moved there and perhaps links to RS disavowals. Abrazame (talk) 22:54, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. There is a category for individuals who renounced Scientology. (Not that I'm comparing the two, just pointing out there is a precedent). --T smitts (talk) 05:01, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
