hi, I'm not sure why this page was moved; could whoever moved it please give an explanation of what is meant by 'free healthcare software'?
First, health might be a better option than healthcare (health is more inclusive). Secondly, by 'free' does this mean 'free' in the sense of 'libre' ie the GNU definition? or is it freeware? We should be clear what software should be classified here. Also there is an existing article on free opensource healthcare software (and freeware health software) --Karl.brown (talk) 18:10, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your second question, free here means libre, free software. "Free <topic> software" is indeed the convention used in the category tree - see Category:Free software and Category:Free application software for dozens of examples. I would support a new convention like "FOSS" (the acronym) or "open source", but it's a change we should discuss for the whole tree, not on a per-topic basis. – Pnm (talk) 23:10, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. hmm.. i just looked at the discussion back in 2006 on Category:Free software, it seems they had a reasonable proposal to use 'Free and open source' or 'FOSS' but this was rejected in favor of just 'free' (which has the disadvantage of not being understood by most people as different than 'freeware'; and according to FSF, some 'open-source' licensed software is not 'free'. In other words, 'free' and 'open-source' are overlapping but one is not a subset of the other. However I'm not currently motivated to start a full tree switch.
To move forward, shall we put a clear definition at the top of this category? I would also suggest that we don't create two categories (like health and health care) - these terms overlap sufficiently that 'health software' and 'free health software' will be sufficient. Also could we ask a bot to delete the 'healthcare software' category? It doesn't include much of note (same for medical software) - all of those would fit just as well under 'health software' (and indeed several of those packages are included in all of those categories) --Karl.brown (talk) 23:41, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
