The category "Environmentalists" is quite broad, including both activists, organizers, theorists/writers, philosophers, essayists, and so on. It makes it a little hard to include it in parent categories correctly. Could we better organize it by creating the categories "environmental activists", "environmentalist writers", "environmental studies scholars", and some category for supporters of environmentalism who are well-known as such but are not, per se, activists (I'm thinking of, for instance, celebrity environmentalists). ??? Some people would have multiple cats instead of "environmentalist", but it would probably also replace some of the other more generic cats like "writers". Thoughts? --lquilter17:25, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree that the category is quite broad. I like the idea of a split into "environmental activists", "environmental writers", "environmental scholars" (or suchlike). I don't see the need for a category those who agree with the environmentalists but are not known for anything notable in the field. Alan Liefting11:23, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
On second thoughts it is not a good idea to have such categories as "environmental activists" since they would become very large. I have been placing environmentalists in their seperate country categories. All the entries in this category should also be placed in country categories. Alan Liefting20:55, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure I see the problem with a broad, inclusive category page for a broad, inclusive group like "environmentalists." A worse problem all over WP are categoy pages that send you out to, say, 3 or 4 articles. (Alan, I suspect you hear this point, since I know you proposed deletion of a few environment cats. last week). I mean, the real goal is that someone who googles Chico Mendez can find his WP page, read something halfway right about him, link to environmentalists at the bottom of the page and find out about lots of other important, or somewhat important, people. The problem with a lot of small categories is that you read about Chico, click on, Brazilian environmental activists, and find out he's the only one famous enough in the US to have a WP bio.
