[edit]What is this category supposed to contain? From the introduction, it seems to be more a category for dynamics (mechanics) than for dynamical systems. Things like having mechanics as a parent category, and containing fictitious force and centrifugal force, also hint at it. But perhaps my view is too narrow. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 23:19, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
What Should This Category Contain?
[edit]I think the purpose of this entry will be to define the term and provide a connecting point to many other related topics. I think Dynamical Systems is primarily a topic of pure math that has applicability in many different disciplines. This particular writeup has many false sub-topics; topics that are related but with no explanation as to how they relate to the main topic. I'm a newbie so I'm not going to immediately try to rewrite it until I have a better feel for how to best contribute to the project. dfletter Nov 20, 2005 5pm pst
- Categories usually do not "explain" what they contain, although the article dynamical system should be a good guide. Funny that you called it "pure math", some people think its applied math and others, physics, even. What do you consider to be a "false subtopic"? linas 02:24, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
I've re-read my note, the writeup in the category and the article on dynamical systems. I honestly can't recreate what I was thinking when I wrote that as it seems pretty straightforward now with nothing that I can point to as a "false topic". Please ignore and forgive the thread as I've obviously fallen prey to a newbie rush. Also, please ignore comment about "pure math" v "applied math" as it was only meant to differentiate between mathematics for computer science v mathematics. I don't see a bright line there so I'm sure different people will draw it at different points. You've done nice work organizing the categories. Dfletter 22:37, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Dynamical Systems vs. Dynamical System
[edit]There are two articles that claim to cover dynamical systems: Page A (Dynamical system) and Page B (Dynamical systems). Page A attempts to portray the field of dynamical systems as it is practiced by mathematicians publishing in journals such as the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society and indexed in Mathematical Reviews. Page B is more limited and offers a distorted view of the questions being considered by those that have their work reviewed in Mathematical Reviews. Maybe the Wikipedians with interest in creating a dynamical systems theory page, such as Page B, could focus the definition given early in that page so no confusion arises with the topic of Page A.
In full disclosure, I did a complete re-write of page A in June of 2005. XaosBits (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 14:27, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
