[edit]This category and the Ancient Greek sculpture, Ancient Greek pottery etc really need tidying into Prehistoric, Bronze Age, Archaic, and Classical. Periodisation in art history also suggests 'Ancient Greek' art and 'Hellenistic' art are distinctive and shouldn't overlap as much as they do here - for example, Hellenistic is not merely in Greece, whereas 'Ancient Greek' suggests (apart from Magna Grecia and the Asia colonies) only the Greek mainland and islands.
I'ld suggest sub-cats (maybe including 'Hellenistic art', but that should also be a sub-cat of 'Classical art' in its own right) by period, using this one as a root category.
I've made a start, but any help or thoughts would be useful. Neddyseagoon - talk 15:04, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- I have to say, however, that Hellenistic Art is also a very dangerous term - it covers such a vast area and time period. I do realise also, though, that terms like baroque and rococo which have been applied are also inappropriate. No modern differentiation will ever satisfy how the ancients saw their own art - as a fluid motion, especially through time... after all, they didn't wake up one day and think "I'm going to be a Hellenistic artist today;" rather it was an organic process. Just something to think about, if a little rambled. Pjmc 19:31, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
